THE HIDDEN HARVEST
A Signature Experience at Schaefer’s Halt
Discover The Hidden Harvest
After good summer rain, the forests at Schaefer’s Halt come alive with wild mushrooms.
Set among pine and oak trees in the Mpumalanga highlands, this natural environment creates ideal conditions for a wide variety of species to appear—often overnight.
The Hidden Harvest is a simple but rewarding experience: walk, look closely, and discover what the forest reveals.

What You May Find

Depending on conditions, experienced foragers may recognise:
Porcini (Boletus edulis) – a highly sought-after edible mushroom
Bay Bolete – commonly found under pine trees
Saffron Milk Cap (Pine Ring) – seasonal and distinctive
Suillus species – typical of pine environments
Slippery Jacks - known for its sticky, brown cap
Each visit is different and depends on rainfall and temperature.
Best Time to Visit
During autumn (March - June)
Shortly after significant rainfall when temperatures are cooler
High humidity, morning dew and temperatures staying above freezing
This is when mushroom activity is at its best.
⚠️ Important Note
DO NOT consume any wild mushroom unless 100% identified!
Some mushrooms are poisonous.
Only forage for consumption if you are confident in identifying species correctly.
