Things to do on the Farm

The farm was established in 1846 and was lovingly taken over by new owners in March 2024.

Explore over 240 hectares of rolling hills, grasslands, panoramic views over the Steenkamp’s mountains, roaming game, waterfalls, abundant wild flowers, gentle slopes and valleys. Watch out for Duiker, Kudu, Mountain Reedbuck, Eland, Oribi, Brown Hyena, Serval, Caracal, Genet, Baboon, Aardvark and more...

Birding

With over 150 bird species recorded in the area, Schaefer’s Halt, our farm is a true paradise for bird lovers. The diverse landscape—rivers, ponds, open grasslands, and forested areas—creates the perfect habitat for an extraordinary variety of birdlife.

Whether you’re an experienced birder or simply enjoy watching nature unfold, you’ll have the chance to spot everything from vibrant sunbirds and colorful kingfishers to majestic raptors soaring overhead and even the iconic African Fish Eagle.

Wildflowers

Schaefer’s Halt is a paradise for nature lovers, boasting over 180 species of wildflowers recorded in the area, including an impressive 66 varieties of orchids. From October to April, the landscape transforms into a vibrant tapestry of color as wildflowers bloom across the property.

The peak orchid season is from December to February, when these rare, delicate flowers are at their most spectacular. Whether you are an avid botanist, a photography enthusiast, or simply someone who loves to marvel at nature’s beauty, exploring the wildflowers at Schaefer’s Halt is a breathtaking experience not to be missed.

Picnics by the river

Immerse yourself in nature’s tranquility with a peaceful picnic by the river or next to one of our serene ponds. Collect a picnic blanket from the office before heading out to your perfect spot.

Lay out your feast beneath the shade of tall trees, listen to the gentle murmur of flowing water, and watch dragonflies dance over the surface. You might spot a bird or two while you dip your toes in the cool water, unwind with a book, or simply soak up the breathtaking scenery.

Sundowners

As the day draws to a close, enjoy a truly magical moment with sundowners at Schaefer’s Halt. Watch the sun set over the Steenkamps Mountains, painting the sky and still waters of the dams in golden hues.

For the adventurous, take a thrilling 4x4 drive to the top of the farm, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of rolling hills and valleys stretching into the distance. Whether you choose a quiet evening by the water or an exhilarating viewpoint high above, our sunsets are always unforgettable.

Stargazing

Thanks to our high altitude and clear mountain air, Schaefer’s Halt offers an exceptional stargazing experience. Far from city lights, the night sky comes alive with countless stars, and on clear evenings the Milky Way stretches across the heavens in all its splendor.

The best stargazing conditions are from May to September, especially during the new moon when the sky is at its darkest. Whether you’re an avid astronomer or simply in awe of the cosmos, Schaefer’s Halt provides the perfect setting to marvel at the wonders of the universe.

Fly Fishing

Whether you’re a seasoned fly fisher or a beginner eager to learn, our waters provide the ideal backdrop for a relaxing and rewarding experience. Please note that fishing is reserved exclusively for our overnight guests—no day visitors are allowed. This ensures that you can enjoy the peaceful setting without crowded dams, giving you the privacy and space you deserve.

Walking or Hiking

Explore the Beauty of the Farm on Foot!

Take a leisurely stroll or embark on an invigorating hike as you immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the farm. Wander around the tranquil ponds, follow the path to the natural spring, and Pidwiddly Dam. For those eager to discover hidden treasures, explore remnants of the past, including Anglo Boer War forts, or venture towards cascading waterfalls and meandering streams.

Choose from two designated hiking trails:

Ereipio Trail (2km) – Greek noun meaning "Ruin," a scenic route through nature

Nerolakkos Trail (3.6km) – Greek noun meaning "Waterhole," leading you to serene water features and breathtaking landscapes.
